How Trauma Affects Relationships

How does your childhood trauma impact your relationships today? Have you ever been in a relationship, dating, or in a relationship, and found yourself in a state of surprise? Did you start screaming during an argument, even though you are usually calm and quiet? Or did you break down when your partner left for a night out with the boys? Or did you feel unusually detached and numb during your most recent breakup?

How Trauma Affects Relationships

Our intimate relationships bring out the very best and worst in us. The emotions that come up during a conflict, or even in a seemingly normal situation, can be shocking for both of us.How does our childhood trauma impact our relationships today? How does our childhood trauma shape how we approach our intimate relationships?

I have found that our childhood experiences, both in our clients and in our own lives, can shape our capacity to love.

1. Subjugation (people-pleasing)

What is a submissive personality?

A submissive personality is someone who puts their partner's needs above their own. A submissive personality is also known as a "people-pleaser." A submissive person is someone who will do anything to keep their partner's peace. A submissive person will often apologize to their partner after a disagreement, even if it is not their fault.

A submissive person tries to make their partner's life better by adding value to it. They want their partner to love them and say "I love you". A submissive person may be afraid of conflict or being left behind in adult relationships. The submissive person's needs are often not met, and they may feel guilty or out of place when they ask for things or express themselves.

These people may have come from a background of being a submissive person. For example, a submissive person may have had a parent who was a subjugator or a parent who was one.

2. Abandonment (fear of rejection)

If you have had a neglectful parent, you may have abandonment issues or difficulty forming a strong emotional bond with your partner. If your parent abandoned you as a kid, you may find it hard to trust your partner. You may hold yourself back because you fear the pain of losing someone.

People with abandonment issues may be overly clingy and need constant validation, or they may have difficulty forming a strong relationship with their partner. These people may experience severe emotional harm when they break up, or they may seem cold and callous because they have never allowed themselves to truly bond with their partner.

3. Entitlement (unrealistic expectations)

If you grew up in a home where boundaries were not respected, you may come into relationships with an entitlement mindset. You may not respond well to being told "no" and may become resentful when your partner attempts to establish healthy boundaries.

You may be attracted to people who are more passive and will do whatever it takes to please you, regardless of how unhealthy or unrealistic it is. This can result in an imbalance in relationships, burnout and a lack of satisfaction and growth.

8 SIGNS THAT SUGGEST YOU ARE IN A ONE-SIDED RELATIONSHIP

You Are The One Who Always Takes The Initiative

Are you the one constantly organizing dates and other activities? If so, consider your partner's actions carefully. If they are truly busy, communicate with them and express your need for their involvement in planning and appreciate when they take the lead. But if your partner has ample free time yet shows no interest in making plans with you, it may be a sign.

You Are Not A Priority To Them

You are at the bottom of their priority list, or worse, not even on it. Despite always being available for them, they take advantage of your kindness. A person who truly loves you would never treat you this way and would always consider your feelings before making decisions, no matter how insignificant.
